HOBBS NAILS THE DOUBLE IN OULTON PARK MAXXIS BRITISH SUPERSPORT RACE
09 May 2007 - Maxxis

Dennis Hobbs took his second successive victory in Sunday’s MAXXIS British Supersport championship race at Oulton Park.

The Padgetts Motorcycles rider took the lead on lap seven of the16 lap race, overtaking early leader Michael Laverty’s Relentless TAS Suzuki on the run into Lodge corner. Hobbs was on pole position for the race, but it was Laverty who took the lead into the first corner, followed by Hobbs and Virgin Media Yamaha’s Billy McConnell.

Series-leader Laverty soon opened up a 1.5 second gap, but Hobbs was hunting him down, closing the gap over just three laps to less than half a second before making his move. Meanwhile McConnell was setting the fastest lap, but fell just after passing Lowry at Druids. “I guess I was a little over eager,” said the young Australian, “but I was racing and these things happen.” This is McConnell’s second DNF of the season. His team-mate Tom Grant would salvage something for the team at the flag with a sixth-place finish.

With just three laps to go, Laverty was relegated to third by his team-mate Ian Lowry at the Shell Oils hairpin. Guy Sanders secured his best result of the season so far with a fine fourth place finish on his Gearlink Racing Kawasaki.

In the early laps, former champion Stuart Easton leapt into fourth place on his ISILON MSS Discovery Kawasaki from eighth on the grid, before using the escape road at the Hislop Chicane putting him down to 14th place. The Scot managed to battle back to 10th at the flag, behind Jamie Robinson on the Margal Bykerbabe Honda and Paul Young on the Triumph 675 Daytona.

Ducati’s Martin Jessopp was black-flagged on lap 10 with a technical problem on his Riders Racing Ducati.

Laverty continues to lead the championship by 26 points but now from team-mate Ian Lowry.

The MAXXIS British Supersport Championship will now go to Snetterton in Norfolk over the weekend of May 18th-20th.
