THREE PODIUMS FOR PBRA ON BSB DEBUT
11 April 2007 - Phil Burgen Race Academy

The Phil Burgan Race Academy (PBRA) structure got off to a strong start at Brands Hatch this weekend with Jonathan Rea setting a strong example for UK1 Racing’s Kev Coghlan and Deane Brown.

James Toseland also provided encouragement as he watched from the sidelines.

With Toseland riding high at the top of the Superbike World Championship standings, Rea set a precedent for the domestic series. The Ulsterman scored a double podium finish with third and second positions respectively on his HM Plant Honda race debut at the opening round of the 2007 Bennetts British Superbike Championship.

Rea proved that he is a serious contender for this year’s title – finishing ahead of many experienced campaigners, including team-mate and defending champion Ryuichi Kiyonari.

The PBRA-supported UK1 Racing riders responded to the challenge set by their more experienced counterpart with Coghlan and Brown finishing in second and eighth positions respectively. The placings were reflective of the riders’ determination to succeed throughout the 15-lap race held at Brands Hatch in front of a sun-drenched crowd of 42,000 spectators.

Coghlan proved himself to be the star of the day following a well-planned and perfectly-executed last-lap manoeuvre that saw him seize second position – and a place on the podium on the final drag to the chequered flag. The UK1 Racing rider utilised a double slipstream produced by his rivals to propel the Dunlop-shod machine to second position from fourth by the narrowest of margins.

Coghlan passed the chequered flag just 0.001 seconds ahead of third-placed Anthony Rogers. Team-mate Brown enjoyed a competitive race on his first visit to the Kent circuit and put up a strong battle for a hard-earned eighth position.

“I’d like to congratulate all of the PBRA-supported riders on their results from the opening round of the British Superbike Championship,” says Phil Burgan. “Developing British talent in motorcycle racing is extremely important and I hope that these initial results are indicative of the success that our riders will enjoy throughout the year within the supportive framework that we are able to provide.”
