RIDESAFE BACKSAFE CAMPAIGN HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT FOR BIKERS
24 March 2007 - Ride Safe Back Safe
According to the latest statistics, less motorcyclists are being involved in fatal crashes in the Lancashire Police area.
During the period from April 2006 until December 2006, fatal motorcycle casualties dropped by 57% against the same period of the previous year and it is partly attributable to the RideSafe BackSafe initiative as Lancashire’s Road Safety Adviser, Shelby Williams explains;- '' The number of fatal motorcycle casualties rose in 2005, with 22 motorcyclists losing their lives, which I believe was higher than the national average. This is why RideSafe BackSafe, a positive and pro-active initiative, was introduced in April 2006 to make others more aware of the vulnerability of motorcyclists and to help bikers with educational messages and advice about defensive riding and further training options. '' But there is always room for improvement and this is the message that the RideSafe BackSafe initiative wants to convey to all bikers at this years’ RideSafe Rendezvous at Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St Annes on Sunday 15th April. The free one-day show is expected to attract more than 2,000 bikers from the North West region for a day of fun and action, as well as offering a wealth of sound advice from a variety of groups and clubs. Shelby Williams continues; '' Young riders on scooters and smaller motorcycles should feel able to come and talk to the experts about their riding skills and techniques. These young riders can be very enthusiastic, but unfortunately their lack of experience on busy roads and inappropriate clothing, makes them more vulnerable and we want to be able to help them in a positive way by giving them sound advice ''. The action-packed show will include performances by highly trained stunt riders Dave Coates and the Xtreme Trials Display Team, as well as the Russian-built MPC Ural motorcycles. Maria Costello - TT racer and Britain’s fastest lady on two wheels – will also appear at the show. The show will also feature a Classic Bike Display. Up to 50 trade stands will have new and used bikes, accessories and clothing on offer for the serious shopper, whilst organisations such as IAM, MAG, BMF and Police motorcyclists will be on hand to advise on riding techniques and to discuss the many rider training courses now available.
