GILERA RACING TEAM FOR 250 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
13 March 2007 - Gilera
Gilera is showcasing its prestigious racing heritage at the 2007 Moto GP World Championship – the most compelling challenge in competitive motorcycling.
Competing for the seventh consecutive year since its return to the world championship, Gilera takes its place in the starting line of a 250 class championship which promises to be a closely fought battle. Last year’s rider, Marco Simoncelli has been joined by Roberto Locatelli, the 2000 125cc world champion; both riders share a desire for world titles so their commitment to Gilera and putting its name on the world-stage of motorcycling is unquestionable. Roberto Locatelli comments, “Joining an official team is a dream come true for a rider; you feel part of a project and you realise the responsibility this places on you. Hopefully, my experience will help Gilera achieve the victories it deserves.” The Gilera team boasts an all-Italian outfit with two powerful Italian riders supported by Italian sponsor, Metis. ‘”The key is continuity,” states Giampiero Sacchi, head of the Piaggio Group racing division, “our programme is a clear reflection of the importance of the all-Italian challenge.” The Metis Gilera Racing team carries on a success story that has gone from strength to strength. Over the years, Gilera has won seven world driver championships and six constructors titles, with a total of 47 Grand Prix victories.
