Aprilia heated things up in the first round of Irta testing on the Catalonian circuit at Barcelona. Jorge Lorenzo, Alex De Angelis, Hector Barbera and Jakub Smrz monopolized the 2006 season’s first day of official testing. The fastest on the day was Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) who recorded a time of 1’47”622, only three- tenths of a second from the track record. The Spanish rider finished 53 laps, around 250 km. Very close to Lorenzo’s time was Alex De Angelis (Master Aspar), who stopped the chronometer at 1’47”949. The rider from San Marino was constantly among the quickest on the Catalonian circuit, leading for a while. Hector Barbera’s performance was also solid (Fortuna Aprilia), only 0.460 seconds behind the top two finishers with a time of 1’48”082. Also beginning to make his presence felt in the top of the classification was Jakub Smrz (Cardion AB) who, with the RSW 250 LE (the initials that identify last year’s official motorcycles), was fourth on the day thanks to his 1’48”317. Seventh with a time of 1’49”082, about 1.5 seconds off the lead, was Roberto Locatelli atop the RSW 250 LE with the colors of Team Toth. Also to note was Antony West (Kiefer Racing) with a 1’49”520. It was the absolute debut for the Italians Alessio Palumbo, a Sicilian atop the motorcycle of Team Matteoni, and Luca Morelli (Angaia Racing).
