JORGE LORENZO BRINGS LUCK TO APRILIA
28 March 2006 - Aprilia
Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) won the Spanish GP, the first engagement of the 2006 world championships.
Lorenzo (who in the second turn of the official tests conquered the pole position with a best lap with a 1’43”984), fought in the first phase of the race with his teammate, Hector Barbera, and with Alex De Angelis of Team Master Aspar. The battle for the lead was up for grabs until the halfway mark when Lorenzo, Barberà, and De Angelis began to jockey for the lead. This last rider demonstrated to be the only one able to follow Jorge Lorenzo on his march to victory. Alex, who took off from fifth, completely changed the setting of his motorcycle after encountering difficulties when approaching curves. The modifications undertaken during the evening by the rider from San Marino’s team gave them their desired results and allowed Alex to conquer second place. Past the checkered flag in fifth place (behind the Japanese Takahashi) finished Hector Barbera. Lorenzo’s teammate and a protagonist during the initial phases of the race, he saw his rhythm steadily give way until he was off the podium. In seventh place finished Roberto Locatelli (Team Toth) while Guintoli of Team Equipe de France came in ninth. Regretful was the exit of Antony West. The Australian rider from team Kiefer Racing completed great qualifying rounds and took off in sixth place. During the race, a mechanical loss forced him to head to the boxes. Leaving the race early was Jakub Smrz. The rider from team AB Cardion who arranged for an RSW 250 LE like Locatelli and Guintoli (the official 2005 motorcycles), fell with six laps left to go. The riders of the 250 will be on the track again in two weeks in Qatar for the second engagement of the 2006 world championships on the Losail circuit.
