LORENZO WINS AGAIN, LOCATELLI GETS THE PODIUM
08 April 2006 - Aprilia

Jorge Lorenzo has won again, this time the second race of the 2006 season, the Qatar Gp.

The 4-liter race was also characterized by the strong wind gusts at the Qatar track. Blowing over 35 km/hour, the wind disrupted the riding, especially during directional changes.

Roberto Locatelli also rose onto the podium with Lorenzo. The rider from Brescia took off in the first line with the third best time but dropped to 21st after the third lap due to a straightaway. Locatelli jumped back on again and climbed back up to 19th place until he passed his teammate, Hector Barbera, at the last turn. Locatelli races on a RSV250 LE of Team Toth and is one of the most experienced riders in international competition. Already a world champion in the 2000 125, it is his third season in the 250.

To combat the wind, a new dynamic part that has been studied to limit the effects of the wind during direction changes was used for the first time in a race. We are talking about a new push rod on the bottom of the frame, redesigned with a series of aerodynamic vents that go from the front bottom part to the back. The technical solution was introduced into the race by Alex De Angelis who, unfortunately, fell in the initial phases of the race. The component was also present in Marco Simoncelli’s Gilera 250 while Jorge Lorenzo and Hector Barbera, who didn’t have the chance to test out the new part, preferred to use the traditional frame.

Getting back to the race, Lorenzo’s victory brought Aprilia its 1111th affirmation in the 250 class.

“We are happy with this victory – said Giampiero Sacchi, the Director of Sport Management for the Piaggio Group – Jorge Lorenzo demonstrated all of his potential. It was also nice to see Roberto Locatelli on the podium who, with his performance, validated the Aprilia product for clients. His comeback was spectacular and emotional.”

Today’s victory puts Aprilia in the lead in both the constructor’s classification and that of the 250 riders (Jorge Lorenzo) with 50 points.

The next race will be the Turkey Gp on the Istanbul Park circuit in three weeks.
