BARBERA CONQUERS HIS FIRST PODIUM
01 May 2006 - Aprilia
Anything can happen in the 250 race at Istanbul Park.
This time, it focused on Shuoei Aoyama atop a Honda after Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia Team) took off in the pole position with a non-exceptional start. Aoyama was closely followed by Alessio Palumbo (Matteoni Racing), Andrea Ballerini (Campetella Racing), and Michele Danese (WTR Blauer). With Lorenzo out of the competition, the race became a contrast between Alex De Angelis (Master Aspar), Hector Barbera (Fortuna Aprilia), Andrea Dovizioso, and Hiroshi Aoyama. The group of four also surpassed Roberto Locatelli (Team Toth) atop an RSV LE. The Lombard rider finished out the race in fourth after a small mistake in the final didn’t allow him to climb atop the podium. De Angelis tried to control the race, fighting with Barbera and Dovizioso with Aoyama at his back. During the last lap, the rider from San Marino was riding on Aoyama and Dovizioso’s trajectory and almost hit Barbera while going 269 km/hour, risking falling off the side of the track. Fortunately, Alex was able to keep the motorcycle on the wet grass along the edge of the asphalt. At that point of velocity circuits, the track is very high as is the danger of incurring serious cuts during falls. The battle between those who remained on the track went in favor of Aoyama atop the KTM while Hector Barbera of Fortuna Aprilia conquered the second 1st place podium of his 250 career. After the Istanbul Park race, the riders’ classification changed with Dovizioso now in command with fifty-two points, followed by Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) who is only two points behind despite the zero he earned in Turkey. Close to the lead are Hector Barbera (Fortuna Aprilia) and Roberto Locatelli (Toth Racing), respectively in 4th and 5th place with forty-four and thirty-eight points. After the Turkish Gp, Aprilia is still in command of the constructor’s classification with seventy-points, eighteen points ahead of its closest rivals.
