BARBERA CLAIMS SACHSENRING FRONT ROW
17 July 2004 - Aprilia
SPANISH teenager Hector Barbera’s world championship challenge continued to gather momentum at the Sachsenring today.
The Seedorf Racing Aprilia rider ended this afternoon’s final 125 qualifying session with a place on the front row of the grid. He missed the chance to claim his second successive pole position as title rival Andrea Dovizioso snatched top spot in the closing seconds. Barbera, who won the last round in Rio to strengthen his bid for world title glory, was one of only two riders in the top 10 who couldn’t improve on his provisional time set yesterday in much cooler conditions. A huge home crowd basked in glorious sunshine as air temperatures hit 24 degrees this afternoon. Barbera was almost 0.343s slower than yesterday, but such was his electrifying pace, his provisional pole time of 1.27.870s was still good enough to secure second on the grid. Barbera will be looking to continue his consistent form in tomorrow’s race, which he will start having scored points in each of the last 17 races including four wins. Only two other riders in the history of world championship racing have enjoyed better consecutive points-scoring streaks. Completing the front row with Barbera are fellow Aprilia riders Steve Jenkner and Mirko Giansanti. Jenkner delighted a partisan home crowd in Germany by taking third spot on the grid. Roars of approval from the packed grandstands greeted his best lap of 1.27.881s, which was 1.064s faster than yesterday. Jenkner is now confident he will be challenging for home success in tomorrow’s 27-lap race. Aprilia riders occupied eight out of the top ten grid positions, with title contender Roberto Locatelli finishing in 10th place. His rhythm was hampered by a crash in this morning’s free practice session. He said: “We missed half the session this morning so we still have to improve the chassis setting. We will work on the geometry in the warm-up.”
