RAIN HINDERS BARBERA AND LOCATELLI HOPES
21 August 2004 - Aprilia

Hector Barbera and Roberto Locatelli will need to produce inspired performances in tomorrow’s Czech Republic 125 GP after rain badly hampered their challenge in final qualifying.

Aprilia’s world title contenders Barbera and Locatelli will start down on the sixth and seventh rows respectively after downpours soaked the 5.403km circuit shortly before the start of the crucial final session. Barbera will start from 24th place having logged a best time of 2.29.160s, while Locatelli is just one place further back as he managed a fastest of 2.29.631s. Locatelli said: “It was a disaster. In those conditions we just couldn’t get the bike set-up and it was no use in taking risks. The race will be very difficult.”

The poor weather conditions though did little to hamper the progress of Rauch Bravo Aprilia rider Marco Simoncelli, who claimed the second pole position of his career. The 17-year-old Italian clocked the best time with a 2.24.458s lap as he quickly mastered the tricky track conditions that were similar to yesterday’s provisional session.

Simoncelli has already shown his liking for wet conditions earlier in the season when he claimed his only world championship success to date by winning the rain-lashed Spanish GP at Jerez back in May.

It is unlikely that the wet conditions will play a key role in tomorrow’s 19-lap race, with forecasts predicting more of the fine and sunny conditions that greeted the paddock on Thursday.
