THE HARLEY GIRLS ARE READY TO THUNDER ON
18 February 2007 - Harley-Davidson UK
The Amazon Heart Thunder Ride returns to the UK for the third consecutive year on 26 August.
The seven-day peer support adventure begins at the Thunder in the Glens H.O.G UK rally in Aviemore, Scotland and ends in London. The annual event began in 2004, when 20 women living with breast cancer challenged themselves to ride 1,000 miles from San Diego to San Francisco on Harley-Davidson motorcyclesâ. Their purpose was to find strength and support through the awe-inspiring experience of the ride-out, to raise awareness of the disease and provide vital funds for global cancer charities. The ride expanded in 2005 to include more than 48 women (at all stages of the disease) from around the world. One of these was Heather Chapple, who chose to celebrate her first year in remission by joining a week-long “support group on wheels”. The Edinburgh-based 38-year-old architect has always had a passion for motorcycles and became an active campaigner for the non-profit making global organisation. She has helped to organise the Amazon Heart’s peer support programme in the UK over the past two years. In 2006, Amazon Heart joined forces with the Ladies of Harley™. and raised more than £7,000 by riding from Oxford to Scotland. “We were all amazed at the generosity of the many people who gave up their time and hard-earned cash to support this worthwhile cause,” explained Heather. “Words can’t express what this support means to the riders who took part.” Heather is now a trustee of the Amazon Heart Trust UK and is hoping that this year’s ride will see even more women experience the life-affirming challenge that is Amazon Heart Thunder. All proceeds from the 2007 UK ride-out will go to Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity and Amazon Heart Trust. Applications for women wishing to take part are now open.
