ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY DRIVING TEST
27 October 2004 - RAC Motoring Services Ltd
Many people haven''t even begun their Christmas shopping yet, but in many parts of the country there''s now no chance of buying one especially coveted gift - a driving test appointment before the end of the year, say driver training experts BSM.
The Driving Standards Agency have pledged to meet their published target of an average nationwide wait of six weeks for a practical test appointment by January 2005. Yet, in the meantime, attempting to book a UK practical driving test remains a postcode lottery with depressingly long queues of desperate learners in many locations throughout the country. BSM instructors have reported that some learners are even travelling hundreds of miles from home to test centres where waiting lists are shorter. ''The situation remains particularly difficult and we are encouraging the DSA to redouble their efforts to tackle the backlog in those hardest-hit locations. Increased numbers of examiners and additional test appointments earlier in the day and at weekends have definitely helped - but the DSA are still under resourced'', says BSM managing director Paul Atkinson. ''And at this time of year, candidates who have reached test standard but whose tests are cancelled simply because of poor weather conditions are especially badly penalised, as they may then go to the back of an extremely long queue.''
