PASINI AND BAUTISTA TALK ABOUT JEREZ
27 March 2006 - Aprilia
The first race of the year came and went, bringing much satisfaction to Aprilia.
The first rider to climb atop the highest podium (that of Jerez) was Alvaro Bautista, the small and aggressive rider from Team Master Aspar who, back atop an Aprilia, dominated his home GP beating out Lukas Pesek (Derbi) and Mattia Pasini (Master Aspar). The two riders from Master Aspar dominated the development of the 8-liter race. Bautista, off to a good start, was able to take the lead in the race and didn’t look back until he reached the checkered flag. “It was a great race – said Alvaro Bautista at the end of the race – both for me and the public. It was incredible, my first victory in front of my home crowd. I didn’t hold anything back in the race, I took off with the motorcycle and it went really well. I have to say that the settings we worked out during the Irta testing were perfect and I actually chose to race with softer tyres, a slight risk that turned out to be a winning choice. At the beginning, I believed I would be fighting more with Lukas (Pesek) but then something happened because he began to lose ground after the first half of the race. I want to dedicate this victory to my team and to Jorge Martinez who believed in me and gave me the possibility of racing for him. ” Different was fate of his Italian teammate. Mattia was not able to get off to a good start and was forced to mount a furious comeback. For him, the podium was a solid start to the season. “I had a horrible start. – said Mattia Pasini - Instead of getting ahead I found myself very behind. I really had to push in order to recuperate the lost ground and at the end, I was able to climb atop the podium. Today’s result is a merit to the team that put me in position to ride my best. I am nevertheless satisfied. If I had finished the way I started, it would have been much worse. It is still nice to start off the season with a podium and I will not throw away points this year like I did last season. ”
