A MOUNTAIN BY FOOT NOT BIKE!
11 February 2007 - Bikesure

MR BIKESURE''S KILIMANJARO STUNT RAISES £8,000 FOR CHARITY

''Thanks - and don''t ever ask me to do it again''

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is the sort of mad stunt that appeals to the average motorbiker. Rob Balls, head of operations at biking insurance specialist Bikesure, is no exception. He''s just completed the massive climb (and has the photos to prove it) and in doing so he raised a massive £8,000 for his chosen charity, VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas).

''I''d like to say a huge thank you to all the people who sponsored me - it really helped, knowing that all that hard work was going to make such a big difference,'' says Rob.

The climb took five days. Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa''s highest peak at 5895 metres above sea level, or about 20,000 ft, or nearly five times the height of Ben Nevis. ''Everything at that kind of altitude is incredibly hard,'' says Rob, ''well, nearly everything. And I became even more disorientated than usual.''

But it wasn''t all fun, and while Rob recommends the climb for any nutters looking for an adventure, he has no plans to do a repeat himself. ''It was an amazing experience and an incredibly tough challenge, both physically and mentally. Throw together lack of sleep, extreme heat and sub-zero temperatures, night climbing and some very unpleasant stomach problems, and you''ve got more entertainment than I really wanted to handle.

''Yes, it was incredibly satisfying to complete the climb. Just don''t ask me to do it, or anything else like it, again!''

Rob will be writing a detailed account of what happened shortly on the Bikesure blog (www.bikesure.co.uk/bikesureblog). Meanwhile you can view his photos at http://robscheesyplace.spaces.live.com/ and if you''d like to make a donation to VSO, visit www.justgiving.com/robsquest
