THE APRILIA SHOW IN SARDEGNA WITH BOLLEY AND VDB
24 July 2006 - Aprilia

The twins from Noale dominated the Sardinian Supermoto Gp as they won both heats of the S2 class and twice finished 2nd in the S1.

The fastest of everyone was without a doubt Thierry van den Bosch who, after marking the best time in Saturday’s qualifying round and the Superpole on Sunday morning, had it in him to bring home a splendid double victory atop the Aprilia SXV 4.5. In Race 1, the transalpine took off in the lead, commanding the race until the 14th lap where he fell during the fast stretch. Having had a large lead, he got back on the saddle in 3rd and gave it his all. He attacked the 2nd place of his teammate Frederic Bolley. The hunger for victory, however, betrayed VDB who fell again two laps before the finish line. With a damaged motorcycle from the fall, he was forced him to throw in the towel. Success, however, didn’t elude Aprilia who knocked a 1-2 punch with Bolley in 1st and Giraudo in 2nd.

In Race 2, Van den Bosch took off again in the lead, leaving the others in the dust. This time, his lead lasted him all the way to the checkered flag that greeted him with well-deserved success. VDB actually raced faster than he did during the qualifying round. Once again, it was 2nd place for Giraudo who achieved absolute success in the Sardinian Grand Prix with 44 total points as opposed to Bolley’s 41, who decreased his rhythm at the end and settled for 5th.

Nonstop emotions also in the S1 class where Christian Iddon (Noale’s solitary official captain) was all that was needed to continue the Aprilia show on the 4th day of racing.
The Englishman, 2nd in Saturday’s qualifying rounds and 3rd in Sunday’s superpole, remained at the pole at the start of Race 1 when only three of the four red lights flashed. The start was however called fair and Iddon found himself in 10th place at the first lap. With his head low and his foot on the gas, his adversaries fell behind him one after another as if they were cones Iddon was racing around. He finished his comeback in an astonishing second place behind the winner, the German Hiemer atop a Ktm.

However, in Race 2, he didn’t allow himself to be surprised at take off and finished directly behind Hiemer. Iddon attacked the entire race, tight on the tail of the German who slammed every trajectory shut. Even at the end, Iddon closed out in 2nd, just 162 milliseconds behind the leader. “Sorry, Ennio” were the first words from Iddon at the end of the race to Ennio Marchesin, the manager of Team Aprilia, testimony of how much the Englishman wanted to win and was upset for not having delivered the top podium to his team. “I am hoping– commented Marchesin – that now Christian definitely understands that he is ready to win. He doesn’t have to be in awe of anyone. However, I am satisfied today because all the riders truly raced well. In the S2, all three riders were fantastic. Apart from VDB (who took off in the pole), even Bolley and Giraudo knew how to make up the time and become protagonists even though they found themselves towards the back of the grid. Also deserving of praise are the guys on the team who supported the riders and always provided them with the appropriate bike for every situation. The oil radiators easily allowed us to deal with the 45 degree-heat on the track and the decision to change the motor oil after every section was a crucial move that contributed to keeping the temperatures down.”

In the S1 Championship, Iddon occupies second place with 158 points in contrast to the 186 of the provisionary leader, Hiemer.

The S2 classification instead sees the couple of Van den Bosch and Giraudo in command with 145 points, closely followed by Bolley with 139. Better yet, three twins in the top three positions of the championship.

The next engagement of the International Supermoto is scheduled for September 10th at the German GP.
