5TH PLACE FINISH
26 August 2006 - Aprilia

After an almost two month pause, the AMA Supermoto Championship started up again with a double date in Denver, Colorado.

The race was held on the new track built at Mile High Stadium on two levels: the first utilizes the asphalt of the pit, while the second uses the surrounding land where an off-road section was created.

The first race that counted for the championship was held at night, Friday, August 25th, and it witnessed the fifth place finish of Darryl Atkins, official rider for Team Pacifico Racing, in the saddle of his Aprilia SXV 5.5, in the Supermoto Unlimited class. The New Zealander on his two-cylinder from Noale, after getting fourth in qualifiers, maintained his position throughout the race. In the fourth lap, due to a “stop and go” imposed on Carlson (KTM) for a false start, he moved up to third, but at the end of the race he was once again surpassed by Bagnis (Ktm) and Carlson. The race was won by Micky Dymond (Honda) followed by Baffeleuf (Husqvarna), Bagnis and Carlson.

In the overall rankings (where Dymond and Baffeleuf are tied at the top with 114 points), Atkins moves up one position passing from tenth to ninth. Thanks to his 16 points, he covered precious distance between himself and his competitors. At this point, getting into the top five is surely one of his main priorities.

The opportunity will present itself in less than 24 hours, when, Saturday, Atkins will try to rise again to the occasion in the second round at Denver.
