FIFTH LEG OF THE SUPERMOTO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
14 September 2006 - Aprilia
THE SXV 4.5 GETS FAR IN THE S2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WITH VAN DEN BOSCH IN 1ST AND 3RD IN THE GERMANY GP. GIRAUDO IS STILL 2ND OVERALL
In Germany, fifth leg of the Supermoto World Championship, Van den Bosch shines again, winning the first race of the S2 class and then third in the following race. Aprilia’s Frenchman takes the lead in the overall standings with 190 points against the 167 of his teammate Giraudo. The race was held under difficult conditions on a civilian track that created a lot of problems for many riders. Among whom were Frederic Bolley, who withdrew from the first race due to a fall and finished 8th in the second race, and Christian Iddon, riding the SXV 5.5 in the S1, who hurt his left knee Saturday and stoically finished with 11th and 7th places. The homestretch has begun towards the 2006 Supermoto World Championship title in the S2 class. The first rider to break away is Thierry Van den Bosch (Aprilia SXV 4.5) who on Sunday September 8, in the Germany GP, put some distance between himself and the other riders. These results allowed him to distance himself from his teammate Jerome Giraudo (Aprilia SXV 4.5) who, prior to this race, shared the lead in the S2. Now, VDB rides alone with 190 points versus the 167 of Giraudo who finished 11th and 9th in Germany. It was a difficult race for everyone, due to the many civilian obstacles present on the track - pavement, asphalt, cement curbs – all of which was bordered by straw which created its own problems. Saturday in particular, during the qualifiers, Christian Iddon (Aprilia SXV 5.5) twisted his knee when he hit a bale of straw. For the official Aprilia S1 rider, however, all was not lost, and thanks to doctors, he was able to finish the race and bring home some precious points (11th and 7th) that allowed him to maintain his position of second in the overall standings. Van den Bosch easily won the first race in the S2 by passing Eddy Seel (Suzuki) during the second lap and putting some distance between himself and his adversaries; he gained a 5”210 advantage over Seel. He got off to a rough start in the final race, but he went right up to second and stuck with Seel the whole race who in turn blocked any passageway VDB might have found. During the last lap, VDB forced it a little too much, and in his last attempt to pass, he made a mistake that cost him his position and he finished third behind Seel and Sylvain Bidart (Honda). Jerome Giraudo, given the difficulties of the track, opted for an even racing style, even if he paid dearly in terms of positions for a couple of errors in the first race where he finished 11th. He did better in the second race, finishing 9th. Another bundle of straw got in the way of Frederic Bolley who was riding a Noale two-cylinder in the S2. The former cross champion, during an attempt to pass in the first race, hit a bale with his springboard and flew off his bike. It was a bad fall and Bolley sustained several injuries to his hip and shoulder. He was forced to throw in the towel, but he returned in the second race and finished eighth. The next Supermoto World race will be October 15, on the “Sagittario di Latina” track which will play host to the Italy Grand Prix.
