PASINI WINS BY A MILLISECOND
05 June 2006 - Aprilia
Mattia Pasini won the Italian Gp, the sixth stop of the 2006 worlds, giving Aprilia her first victory of the day.
The rider of Master Aspar Team conducted an aggressive race from the start, taking off in the first line with the second best time obtained in Saturday’s trials. At the stop light, the rider from Ricci knew how to get the time that would put him in the lead with Alvaro Bautista (Master Aspar) at his back and Pesek (Derbi), Faudel (Master Aspar), and Nieto (Multimedia Racing) following behind. At the first pass, Mattia was a second slower compared to his competition. Yet he immediately formed a competitive group led by Bautista and then Pesek. The battle between these riders continued throughout the duration of the race while Federico Sandi hit the ground in the back at the “Angry #1”, fracturing his left malleolus. The rider from Lombardy already fractured the same bone in a fall during the Le Mans trials. He is listed as probable for the Catalonia Gp. Towards the middle of the race, Faubel began a personal comeback as Pesek really got hot with times that were closer and closer to the qualifications. In the meantime, the race officials penalized Andrea Iannone for a false start and later eliminated him with the black flag as he did not return to the box for the penalty of a ride through. At the head of the race were the two Master Aspar teammates who contended with a tight battle with Bautista, often ahead of Pasini. In the meantime, Pesek studied the situation and waited for the right moment to attack. During the penultimate lap, Pasini decided to pass Bautista and Pesek to go for the straightaway following Bucine’s exit. In the last turn at the end of the long straightaway, Pasini used his brakes less than everyone else and was able to ride the lead all the way to the checkered flag. At the end, Mattia Pasini won the Italian Gp by millisecond over his teammate Alvaro Bautista. In third was Lukas Pesek for Derbi. Here are Mattia Pasini’s words that explain the emotions of a victorious rider in front of his home crowd: “I wanted to win at all costs. For me, for my team, for the Mugello fans, and for Aprilia who gave me a fantastic motorcycle. It was fundamental to win here, I owed everyone. I hadn’t won since last year’s Barcelona Gp and we had a fun, fast, and fair race. It was so nice to take the victory lap, I’m sure I spent six minutes thanking all of the fans at Mugello”. With today’s performance, Mattia Pasini is third in the general riders’ classification with 74 points while his teammate Alvaro Bautista remains on top of the worlds with 119 points. After today’s victory, Aprilia’s increased her points to133 in the constructors’ classification and conquered her 81st victory in the 125.
