BAUTISTA THE LEADER
21 June 2006 - Aprilia

Alvaro Bautista, Hector Faubel, Sergio Gadea, and Mattia Pasini, the poker of the Master Aspar Team in the Catalunya GP.

The four riders from the Spanish team were also the first to reach the checkered flag, a truly historical event.

Similar to the events of the Turkish GP, Master Aspar replicated its splendid result and placed three riders (and three Spaniards) ahead of everyone else. The team, managed by “Aspar” Martinez, is one of the strongest in the world and certainly the largest with five riders in the 125 (Bautista, Faubel, Gadea, Pasini, and Tunez) and one in the 250 (Alex De Angelis).

The 125 saw Nieto, Faubel, Bautista, Pesek (Derbi), and Luthi (Honda) take off well with Pasini and Gadea behind them, ready to take advantage of the situation. After four laps, Luthi broke the stalemate and took the lead while Bautista seemed to wait for the best moment to go all out as Faubel followed closely behind. The rhythm picked up and Pasini tried to reduce the gap separating him from the top three, but his motorcycle needed to stay in the wake to keep up with Gadea and Pesek.

In the middle phases, Luthi seemed to lead the group while Pablo Nieto of Multimedia Racing was once again absorbed on the straight-aways. But it was Mattia Pasini who stubbornly took the lead as Gadea and Bautista stayed on his tail, ready to profit from the situation. The group had four Aprilias, one Derbi, and one Honda atop which Luthi sought to take advantage with the wake so that he could arrive at the end of the straightaway with a slight advantage since it’s easier to complete the first variant while in the lead.

The last lap saw the cards shuffled even more. The Spaniards from Team Master Aspar were all looking for victory and without any subtlety, Faubel began the last lap in the lead with Bautista hot on his trail and Gadea and Pasini locked in for the battle for the podium. In the last variant, it was Bautista who had his way and finished first, cashing in on the 25 points that came along with the top podium. Behind him, Faubel and Gadea continued to battle and banished Pasini to fourth.

A completely Spanish podium that was also exclusively Master Aspar ended up like this: Alvaro Bautista won and now has 144 points in the championship, Faubel came in second, and Gadea finished third.

With the day’s performance, Aprilia rose to 158 points in the world constructor’s championship and remains the leader with 65 points of advantage on the closest competition.

“It was without a doubt a beautiful race – commented Giampiero Sacchi, the Director of the Piaggio Group’s Sports Management – full of satisfaction for the Group that placed five motorcycles (including Pesek’s Derbi) in the top five in the Catalunya Gp. This result is once again testimony of Aprilia’s engagement in competitions and we need to thank all those who contributed to these results and the teams that put our motorcycles on the track.”
The next 125 race will be this Saturday in Assen for the Dutch Gp, the 8th engagement of the 2006 season.
