BAUTISTA SHOOTS FOR WORLD
14 September 2006 - Aprilia

Alvaro Bautista of Master Aspar Team won the Malaysia Gp, going on to conquer his 6th victory of the season.

Bautista was truly dominant in a race that held many surprises, starting with the accident between Simone Grotzky and Mattia Pasini (Aspar Team) during the reconnaissance lap that sent the rider from Team Campetella off the track.

The 125 was raced in two separate parts. The first lasted only two laps before the red flag came out prior to the third turn due to a scary accident involving Andrea Iannone and Mattia Pasini’s motorcycle. The new rider of Team WTR Blauer hit the Master Aspar motorcycle right at the end of the curve that empties out onto the home straightaway. Iannone found Pasini’s bike in front of him and couldn’t avoid the collision. The rider was then flung onto the ground, causing a lumbar contusion upon impact and fracturing a bone in his right hand.

After the accident, management interrupted the race and then allowed it to start up twenty minutes later for twelve laps. At the second takeoff, Kallio took off well but Bautista went on to take the lead at the first curve with Pasini at his back. Bautista’s tactic also seemed clear in Race 1, taking it wide to hold onto his advantage through the end. Right then, the Iberian rider’s pace left Kallio alone with Pasini at his back, battling with teammate Faubel and Simon of KTM.

The battle was centered on the second group. Also doing everything to grab the podium were Joan Olive and Sergio Gadea, the ladder being Pasini and Bautista’s teammate. In the second part of the race, the after-effects of the fall kept Mattia Pasini from racing with equal weapons to those of the riders in the second group. Faubel was in the running until the end of the race when Bautista was solidly in the lead Kallio was alone in second. Faubel had his hands full with Simon atop the 2nd Ktm.

Just at the last lap, the situation resolved itself in Faubel’s favor as he was able to pass Simon just a few meters from the checkered flag.

With his sixth victory, Alvaro Bautista increases his lead in the riders’ championship, postponing his conquest of the title until Australia. With 255 points, Bautista is 74 points ahead of his closest follower, Kallio, while Pasini is by now far behind with 153 points.

The conquest of the title in the constructors’ category was also postponed till the next race for Aprilia. With 278 international points, Aprilia has a 92 point-advantage on Ktm.
