25TH WORLDS FOR APRILIA
17 September 2006 - Aprilia
Aprilia conquered its 25th World Championship in Australia.
Thanks to Alvaro Bautista’s victory on the Phillip Island circuit, two laurels have been added to the illustrious history of the “School of Champions”. A marquis title and rider in the category (the 125) that began the successful racing history of the production house when Alex Gramigni conquered the first title in 1992. The Australian 125 GP saw two starts after an accident in the first lap forced the race direction to throw out the red flag. After the second start, Kallio tried to go wide but Alvaro Bautista was able to take command of the race and his adversaries without incident. Behind him, Kallio and Pasini battled it out, the latter of which was able to race notwithstanding an initial fall. Bautista crossed the finish line with more than four seconds of advantage on Kallio and Pasini, who lost the place due to a mistake at the end. The Spanish rider who found himself atop the highest grade of the podium signed the golden list before he mathematically conquered the international rider’s title with 280 points, 79 more than his closest competition, Mika Kallio. “I’m a world champion! - exclaimed Bautista after the race – it is a fantastic sensation!! I have to enjoy this moment because it’s rare that things always go your way in sports. I have to thank my team for this success since they worked extremely hard, starting from the winter tests. Everyone always put forth their best to allow me a practically perfect season. I also want to thank Aprilia and their technicians who always supported me. Thanks to everyone!” Thanks to Alvaro Bautista’s preemptory victory, Aprilia broke the spell of Phillip Island where, prior to this weekend, no 125 from Noale had ever won. Not only this, but Bautista is the first Spanish champion atop an Aprilia and brings the first international title to the manager and huge motorcycling legend, “Aspar” Martinez, the head of the Master Aspar team. Yet today’s victory also signifies a new international laurel for Aprilia in the constructors’ category. With 303 points (97 of advantage in respect to KTM), Aprilia conquered her 6th international constructors’ championship and the 25th overall in Aprilia’s racing history. Furthermore, Aprilia’s international titles now total six in the 125 constructors’ category, seven in the 125 riders’ category, five constructors’ titles in the 250, and seven for riders in that same category.
