PODIUM FOR BAUTISTA
24 September 2006 - Aprilia
Another great race for Alvaro Bautista who finished the Japanese GP in second place after a continuous battle with Kallio.
His teammate Mattia Pasini also did well; mounting a furious comeback, he just missed the podium arriving under the chequered flag in fourth place. Bautista, new World Champion in the category, began the race in an immediate duel with Kallio, in a group made up of also Hector Faubel, Pesek and Simon. The two riders out front went back and forth, exchanging positions until the fourth lap, when Bautista tried to break away from Kallio. Behind them, the three riders battled it out, with Pesek trying to get by Faubel and Simon. Mattia Pasini, however, had problems right from the beginning. The Italian rider from Master Aspar Team did not get off to a good start and after the first curve was in about twentieth place. Pasini, who had difficulty maximizing his Aprilia during the weekend at Motegi, began to rapidly catch up, and at about halfway through the race, was able to reach the group of followers mentioned before. Soon after, Pasini got himself into third position after having passed Pesek, Faubel and Simon. The lead was once again going back and forth between Bautista and Kallio, who remained glued to the Aprilia World Champion’s wheel. Also noteworthy is Raffaele De Rosa’s fall (with no serious consequences); he fell during the second curve of the Twin Ring when he was in seventh place. De Rosa suffered only minor contusions on his ankles and will participate in the Portuguese GP on October 15. The battle for third continued behind Bautista and Kallio, with Pasini who was able to control the attacks made by Simon, Pesek and his teammate Faubel. In the last lap, Kallio passed Bautista just before the last tunnel and was able to maintain his position as they crossed the finish line, while Pasini lost control of his bike for a moment and thus lost his third place position to Simon. With his second place finish, Bautista earned 20 points, and went up to 300 overall points, while Aprilia moved up to 323, although they were both already World Champions after the Australian GP. The battle for second continues, with Kallio slightly in front of Pasini who appears to be very ready to fight for the position against the Finnish rider in the last two races of the year.
