DE ANGELIS, FIFTH AND THE BEST
24 May 2006 - Aprilia

Alex De Angelis of Master Aspar Team was the best Aprilia rider in the 250 at the French GP.

The ever-changing conditions at the Bugatti track, famous for its 24 hour “classic”, forced the rider from San Marino to adopt a fence-sitting tactic in hopes that the track conditions would become more favorable. The key to De Angelis’ race-pace was in the temperature of the pavement that increased with every lap. The weather, even today, was one of the key factors in choosing solutions to adapt during the race. The fact that the warm up took place on a wet track didn’t aid in the choosing of the best adapted tyres for the race. Alex’s race began well, in the lead group. With the passing of the laps, the rider from team Aspar stabilized third place ahead of S. Aoyama (Honda) and H. Aoyama (Ktm). During the course of the race, the asphalt began to heat up, making it difficult for De Angelis’ tyres.

At the end, Alex had to settle for fifth place right behind the Japanese riders that he had dominated all race long. Thanks to the points he earned today, Alex is in 8th place with 35 points. Behind him, Roberto Locatelli also had another nice race. The rider from Team Toth, atop an RSV 250 LE, took off well and was able to insert himself in the battle for the top places. At the seventh lap, Locatelli was the victim of a pileup caused by Jorge Lorenzo of Fortuna Aprilia who ended his race in the sand of the Bugatti track. Fortunately, Locatelli’s motorcycle didn’t sustain any damages from the impact and the Lombard rider was able to finish the race.

He came in 6th place ahead of Hector Barbera (Lorenzo’s teammate) who consolidated his 2nd place internationally with 78 points. Also in the top ten was the home favorite, the French Sylvain Guintoli who came in 9th atop an RSV 250 LE of Team Equipe de France. The other rider with an LE, Jakub Smrz of Cardion AB Racing, finished in 10th. Also making good of the race were Antony West and Andrea Ballerini, both atop standard RSV 250’s and closing out the race in France in 10th and 11th place overall. Today’s performances allow Aprilia to maintain its leadership in the international constructor’s category with 106 international points, 19 more than the closest competitor.
