APRILIA’S TWINS
05 June 2006 - Aprilia

Jorge Lorenzo of Fortuna Aprilia reeled in a victory in the 250 at the 2006 Italian Gp.

The Spanish rider scoffed at a great Alex De Angelis of Master Aspar (who had dominated the majority of the race) during the last lap. The two riders battled together with Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) who arrived third until the checkered flag.

After taking off immediately in the pole position, Lorenzo started trying to distance himself from the others but a lead group composed of Debon (Aprilia Racing test rider racing for Fortuna Aprilia), Takahashi and Dovizioso (Honda), De Angelis (Master Aspar), Jakub Smrz (Cardion AB), and Roberto Locatelli (Team Toth) formed immediately. These riders set the pace of the entire race but Hector Barbera was unfortunately not among them. The Fortuna Aprilia rider had to return to the box after his clutch broke immediately following take-off.

The tight lead group began to fall behind in the 5th lap when Jakub Smrz lost control of his RSV 250 LE at the “Angry #2”. In the meantime, Roberto Locatelli (also atop an RSV 250 LE) tried to take command of the race by making decisive and spectacular passes past Alex De Angelis and Jorge Lorenzo.
Then, contact with Takahashi forced him out of the running for the podium after he damaged an anterior tyre.

At that point, Alex De Angelis tried to take the lead and distance himself from the group. The rider from San Marino’s strategy was to stay wide and control the edge until he crossed the checkered flag. Unfortunately for Alex, things didn’t go as planned. Both Lorenzo and Dovizioso remained neck and neck at De Angelis’ tail for the next twelve laps. At the end of the race with only two laps to go, Alex opened up to pass Lorenzo but Dovizioso snuck in between them, ruining his plan. At the end, Jorge Lorenzo won the race just .111 seconds ahead of Alex De Angelis.

With today’s performance, Jorge Lorenzo added 25 points to his marching list and brought himself up into second place with 88 international points. In the meantime, Alex De Angelis moved into 7th with 55 points.

Thanks to today’s victory, Aprilia distanced herself even more from her competitors. She remains in the lead of the constructor’s classification and won her 112th race since her debut in the world championships.
