VICTORY AT ASSEN
26 June 2006 - Aprilia
Jorge Lorenzo from Fortuna Racing has no doubts: it is his weekend.
The Spanish rider, main player of the two days of official trials, finished up in pole position, and had few doubts about the actual race. At the end of the race, in the saddle of this RSW250, Lorenzo immediately dusted his adversaries going aggressively to the head of the race. Behind him was Locatelli from Toth Team, Dovizioso (Honda), De Angelis from Master Aspar and Takahashi (Honda). In the final stages, a small group of riders fell due to a slip up by Aoyama (Honda). Because of this, they ended up in the sand, among them Ballerini (Team Campetella) Cluzel and Guintoli (Equipe De France). In the meantime, the trio of Lorenzo, De Angelis and Dovizioso kept on distancing itself from the others, leaving Locatelli and his RSV250LE to lead the second group, followed by Debon (Fortuna Aprilia), followed by Takahashi (Honda) and Simoncelli (Gilera). Lorenzo, went on to make record lap times, so much so that his distance at the halfway point was a solid 5 seconds infront of the De Angelis-Dovizioso couple. In fact, the two followers put on a show trying to catch up to Lorenzo (who seemed unstoppable) and De Angelis fought hard to defend his second place from Dovizioso. In the final part, De Angelis and Dovizioso got a scare when they were about to lap the slowest riders and could not get past them, as they had not gotten the blue flag. In the end under the chequered flag, Lorenzo won the Holland GP with an 8 second advantage over De Angelis and Dovizioso. Thanks to the victory, Lorenzo added 16 points to his top position in the world championship with a total of 133 points, while Alex De Angelis earned two positions moving him up to 91 points (tied with Locatelli). For Aprilia, Lorenzo’s victory is the 197th in the house’s carrier (125 and 250), the 114th in the 250. Not just that, but thanks to the 25 points gained y the Spanish rider, Aprilia is still the leader of the rainbow classification with 176 points, a 22 point advantage over its closest competitor.
