LORENZO HEADS APRILIA SQUAD
01 July 2006 - Aprilia

Jorge Lorenzo of Fortuna Aprilia obtained a provisional pole position for the English Grand Prix which will take place on Sunday 2 July at the Donington Park race track.

The Spanish driver completed his fastest lap in 1’32”115. Lorenzo has just had a victory in the Grand Prix in Holland where he led the race from start to finish and only Alex De Angelis could keep apace. At the end of the official trials, Lorenzo was confident of maintaining both his leadership today and for tomorrow’s trials.

De Angelis, from the Master Aspar, was the second quickest driver of the day with a time of 1’32”670. The driver from San Marino, who was also second in the free trials, is coming down with ‘flu and this prevented him from getting pole position. Having altered his tilt, Alex easily improved his time this afternoon without over tiring himself too much. However, his fever was evident by the end of the day and, to limit possible complications, Alex was immediately sent off for medical care.

A surprising appearance by Hector Barbera, Jorge Lorenzo’s team mate in Fortuna Aprilia. The motorcyclist from Valencia has returned to the track after injuring the radius in his right arm after falling from his mountain bike when practicing on the eve of the Gran Premio in Catalonia.

Barbera managed to secure himself a place with his first lap with a time of 1’32”846, good enough for third place. This was admirable as he is still limited in his movements and drives with a brace on his wrist without resorting to pain killers. Will he be able to perform well with such a hinderance? For the moment, he is proving to be brave, tenacious and extremely fast.

In fifth position, the veteran Roberto Locatelli on his RSV250LE of Team Toth. Again we see the Italian racer keeping up with the fastest drivers. His second lap today, with a time of 1’33’331, is an excellent starting point for an even better performance.

Sylvain Guintoli (French team) and Andrea Ballerini (Campetella) both had inconsequential falls but qualified in twelfth and fourteenth place respectively.
