LORENZO TAKES FIFTH VICTORY
03 July 2006 - Aprilia

Jorge Lorenzo conquered his fifth victory of the season at the Donington Park track.

The rider of Fortuna Aprilia crossed the finish line alone, signaling his umpteenth good result and propelling him into battle for the worlds with his 158 international points, just behind Dovizioso, leading the classification by a single point.

At the start, Lorenzo took off in second behind Dovizioso, notwithstanding the pole he conquered during the official trials. At the second curve of the next lap, Lorenzo passed Dovizioso who then remained in the wake of the rider of Fortuna Aprilia. Behind them was Alex De Angelis (Master Aspar) and Aoyama (KMT) in contention for 3rd. For Lorenzo, it was another crowning weekend where everything went well. The rider from Palma de Mallorca now has the determination to do well and is demonstrating it. The rider from Fortuna Aprilia’s pace was extremely fast (always in the low 33’s) and capable of taking care of the De Angelis/Aoyama attack (they crossed the finish line 6.257 seconds behind Lorenzo).

Lorenzo’s race was dominated by Dovizioso until the 16th lap when the Italian rider fell on the ramp leading to the box. From there on out, the challengers for the podium were De Angelis and Aoyama. With the Japanese rider ahead, De Angelis pushed until the end for second place, which he was finally able to pull off at the last lap.

As Lorenzo cut the finish line and moved up in the international classification, De Angelis was able to pass Aoyama. Thanks to this result, De Angelis is now 3rd in the international classification with 111 points. However, it still wasn’t an easy race for De Angelis. With his riding style, it’s better to mount a hard back tyre that guarantees consistent allocation. Unfortunately, the selection proved to not be the best in the first lap of since the track conditions were different than they were during Saturday’s trials. Yet with the passing of the laps, the track warmed up and the gas diminished in the tank, allowing Alex to increase his rhythm and attack and pass Aoyama.

Of note is the optimal race of Hector Barbera, Jorge Lorenzo’s teammate on Fortuna Aprilia, who crossed the finish line in 5th place notwithstanding the after-affects of the injury he suffered before the Catalonian GP. Roberto Locatelli’s race was also solid as he brought his RSV250LE across the finish line in 4th place.

With today’s results, Aprilia conquered her 198th victory overall which is also the 115th in the 250. Thanks to Lorenzo’s victory, Aprilia also remains atop the 250 constructors’ category with 201 points.
