SIXTH WIN FOR LORENZO
22 August 2006 - Aprilia

Jorge Lorenzo continues to prove himself as the rider to watch in the 250 class

This weekend at the Czech Republic race, the Fortuna Aprilia rider was in pole position in two days of official trials, and went on to win the race ahead of Dovizioso and Aoyama.

It was a clear success, both for the Spanish rider and for Aprilia, who has been able to back the rider in his strongest moment of the season, giving him the necessary support to do his absolute best.

Lorenzo began his race with a not so brilliant start and had to catch up with the group made up of Dovizioso, Aoyama and Alex De Angelis. The Master Aspar rider was unable to finish the race due to a fall that took him out of the picture during the fifth lap. While in the curve, Alex hit the ground due to a hole that made him lose control of the backend of his bike. For the rider from San Marino, it was his third race zero and he’s stuck at 131 points, fifth place in the ranking.

Lorenzo, on the other hand, after half the laps had been raced, was out in front with Aoyama always at the Fortuna Aprilia rider’s heels, but Aoyama was unable to make an attempt to pass. Lorenzo, aware of the constant presence of the Japanese rider, pushed the rhythm and began to gain ground on the KTM rider, who at the end of the race was also passed by Dovizioso right in the last curve.

For Lorenzo, the win was decisive; he crossed the finish line alone with a 2.5 second advantage over Dovizioso. Behind the top three riders, another battle ensued, with Roberto Locatelli from Team Toth, who finished out his Czech Republic race with a great fourth place finish. Roberto had tried to stick with the leading group in the beginning stages of the race, but when the three riders broke away, he rode alone between the two packs. After Brno, Locatelli is sixth in the world rankings with 127 points (first of the riders in the saddle of a RSV250LE), just four points behind De Angelis.

Hector Barbera also participated, as did Aprilia Racing test pilot Alex Debon, along with Shuoei Aoyama and Cardenas. Barbera, after having gained the lead of his group, finished fifth, while Debon faulted a technical problem for his twelfth place finish.

Thanks to today’s victory, Lorenzo is still the leader of the classification with 199 points, a seven point advantage over Dovizioso. Just the same, Aprilia, after the Czech Republic GP, is out in front in the 250 manufacturers’ classification with 246 points, 37 more than Honda.
