WIN IN SEPANG
14 September 2006 - Aprilia
Jorge Lorenzo won the 250 in the Malaysia Grand Prix.
The rider from Fortuna Aprilia continues to enrich his marching list this season with his second consecutive victory, the 7th of the season. The 250 race immediately saw the rider from Palma de Majorca among the protagonists. Taking off well from the first row, Lorenzo fought for over half the race with his seasonal rival, Andrea Dovizioso. Also of note was the great race carried out by Roberto Locatelli of Team Toth. Locatelli was in the top three when he was a victim of a fall that took him out of the running for the podium. During the slip, Locatelli was able to keep his RSV250LE upright and finish the race, closing out in 5th place. Also nice was the race from Alex De Angelis of Master Aspar Team. The rider from San Marino had a problem before takeoff when his tachometer broke, costing him ten seconds in the first lap. Yet Alex didn’t get down on himself and began to pass his adversaries until he was in position to fight for the race. In the battle between Dovizioso and Lorenzo, Alex played the involuntary role of judge. In a breakaway attack, De Angelis changed his trajectory and passed Dovizioso, coming up on Lorenzo’s tail. This maneuver separated the three contenders, allowing Lorenzo to gain precious space as he passed through the checkered flag. For De Angelis (who had a bad start), the race ended with a 3rd place that also placed him in 3rd place in the riders’ classification. Lorenzo, instead, maintains his international lead as this victory brings his point total to 224, twelve ahead of Dovizioso’s 212. Of note was the pole man’s exit from the scene during the second lap. Hector Barbera, Lorenzo’s teammate, was the victim of a fall that luckily caused no harm to the Spanish rider. Andrea Ballerini also completed a great race for Team Campetella. He was in 12th place when he fell and exited the Malaysia Gp after only eleven laps. Thanks to Jorge Lorenzo’s victory, Aprilia remains the leader in the constructors’ category with 271 points, 42 ahead of Honda’s 229. The next race will be held on September 17th on the Phillip Island circuit in the Australian Gp.
