CAFFE LATTE SUPERMOTO TRAINING
19 January 2007 - Superbike School
News from training by Andy
Thomas Luthi After a crash on cold tyres riding an Aprilia in Italy Thomas was not keen or comfortable with the idea of SuperMoto training. On the first day of training in Germany at an indoor karting venue, he used his new and lovely looking Aprilia 550. Unfortunately, for the track layout we were using the bike was too fast! After trying it for a few sessions, he then switched to his old bike, which he felt much more comfortable with. The old bike was fitted with worn out Dunlop rain tyres and was therefore perfectly suited to what we wanted to achieve - being comfortable with the bike moving around and using the body to compensate for this movement. SuperMoto should be very intense with upper body motion. There were a number of points that needed improvement and, as ever, you only had to explain to Thomas what you wanted and why and he would be trying it first time out. Some of this was alien to him but he worked with it and was happier by the end of the first day but not completely comfortable yet. On day two, we spent time refining points rather than new learning techniques and even after the first 20 minutes he had a huge smile on his face. By the end of the day he was sliding the bike further into the turns and even started sliding with only one hand on the bars (the other waving)! To see a clip of Thomas sliding click on the pic in the RH bar Sandro Cortese Sandro looked more at home on the Super Moto to begin with but he was not sliding well or consistently so we had more work to do. He does find it hard to get comfortable with a technique and then keep it in place in his riding. If you give him one thing and he does it, if you add another then the first thing can be forgotten very quickly and needs continuous reminders. However, by the end of the second day he was getting the basics of sliding and moving his body in tune with the bike. He does need to do more of this type of training and to fit his bike with old rain tyres. The slicks he used were allowing him to overcome many mistakes he was making! Something we see in many riders, even at the highest levels. All the best Andy
