SIGNING NEWS
08 January 2007 - Wolverhampton Speedway

WILLIAM Lawson has put pen to paper on a new contract with Wolverhampton - but Rye House youngster Steve Boxall has turned the club down.

Lawson, who enjoyed an impressive debut season with the club in 2006, will continue to double-up with Second Division Edinburgh.

He signed the contract at the weekend after travelling down from his Scottish base to promote the club at Parrys International open day.

Boxall, however, has pulled out of a deal to share the reserve position with Lawson as he doesn''t feel it''s the right time in his career.

Club owner Chris Van Straaten said: ''It''s disappointing for us, but these things do happen and both Pete Adams (team manager) and myself must now look elsewhere for a doubling up option.

''We''re committed to signing another rider now William is back on board. He travelled down and stayed overnight at the weekend and we had dinner on Saturday when he put pen to paper.

''Whilst it''s great news for us to have William back on board, we are disappointed with Steve''s decision but we fully understand the reasons why.

''He feels it''s not the right move for him at this stage of his career and we now have to look elsewhere. Whilst William''s education is now complete, there are a lot of Friday tracks in the Elite League and William will, of course, be unavailable because of his Eduinburgh meetings.''

WILLIAM LAWSON PROFILE

Date of Birth: February 27, 1987, Perth, Scotland.

British Career Record:

Wolverhampton 2006-present

WON a Wolverhampton contract after lifting the British Under-18 title in front of Monmore promoter Chris Van Straaten in 2005.

He doubled-up with Premier League side Edinburgh and exceeded all expectations as he took the bulk of the meetings at the expense of Sheffield''s Ben Wilson in 2006.

William travels from his Scottish base but this year has arrangements in place to make life easier when riding for Wolves.

Van Straaten has a good relationship with the Edinburgh management and the ultimate am is to continue the youngster''s development with a view to a full-time move into the Elite League in 2008.
