SCOOTERS ARE THE SOLUTION
10 January 2007 - Piaggio

INCREASING TRANSPORT COSTS AFFECT COMMUTERS

Commuters were greeted back to work in 2007 by increasing costs across the transport networks making travelling to work more expensive for people all over the country.

Many areas’ regulated local train fares across the UK, which include season tickets, have risen by 4.3%. Average increases in unregulated fares will be 6.6% on Virgin West Coast, 5.9% on Midland Mainline, 5.7% on Central Trains and Heathrow and Gatwick Express tickets are up by 7.3%.

Ken Livingstone admits that our capital city now has the most expensive public transport system with a single cash Tube fare in Zone 1 rising from £3 to £4. Bus passengers will also suffer due to a 25% increase in the cost of a single cash fare during peak-time travel, a single journey during this time now costs £2.

As conditions on public transport remain the same, Piaggio, scooter market leader, explains why choosing to travel by two wheels is practical, economical and more enjoyable as it puts you in control of your commute:

1. A full tank of petrol for a scooter costs approximately £5 which is only £1 more than a single Tube fare in Zone 1, and one tank of petrol will provide two weeks transport all over London.

2. Scooters can reduce journey times by up to 40% when compared to other forms of urban transport[1].

3. Scooters are one of the most fuel-efficient ways to get around. The Vespa LX 50cc, for example, holds nine litres of petrol and can run over 300km to the tank. This makes travelling by scooter as energy efficient per passenger mile as a London bus[2].

4. Free parking is available for scooters across the UK.

5. Scooters are exempt from London’s Congestion Charge, saving riders a further £8 per day.

You can ride away on a scooter today if you have a valid UK driving licence. If you have a provisional license (or gained your full license after 1st February 2001), you just need to complete a one-day Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT).
