SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
17 October 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
SIMON Stead put behind him the disappointment of missing out on the Premier League Riders'' title a month ago to win the Northern Classic back at Sheffield on Sunday.
The former Tiger, now with Workington was simplay unstoppable. Only a month ago he suffered a dislocated shoulder when he collided with Andre Compton in the final of the PLRC and yet he went through the card in his five qualifying races and rarely looked troubled. Hull''s Magnus Karlsson joined him as an automatic qualifier for the final with 13-points which left Sam Ermolenko, Craig Boyce, Adam Allott and Tigers star Ricky Ashworth to do battle in the semi. Ashworth was looking comfortable for a place in the final only for Boyce to pass him in fine style after Ermolenko had earlier pulled well clear - Ashworth''s superb season was over. In the final, Ermolenko hit the tapes and was put back 15-metres but nothing was going to stop the mighty Stead who won comfortably. TOP SIX (Qualifying scores in brackets): Simon Stead (15), Magnus Karlsson (13), Sam Ermolenko (10) Craig Boyce (10), Ricky Ashworth (12), Adam Allott (10). OTHER SCORERS: Brent Werner 7, Mark Lemon 7, Richard Hall 7, Robbie Kessler 6, Jason Bunyan 5, Ben Wilson 5, Jason Lyons 5, Adam Skornicki 5, James Birkinshaw 2, Ritchie Hawkins 1.
