SPEEDWAY 1

CHRISTIAN Henry is Newcastle''s first signing for the 2007 season.

The popular Australian completed the deal after taking the club''s rider of the year award at their presentation dinner.

Diamonds co-promoter George English said: ''The key element was that Christian wanted to come and ride for Newcastle again just as much as we wanted him, so it took no time at all to finalise a deal.''

SPEEDWAY 2

NEW Arena-Essex owner Stuart Douglas believes the sport has a bright future.

Douglas has taken over from Ronnie Russell and is expected to name a new management team in the near future.

He said: ''I believe speedway in general is on the verge of something special. TV viewing figures are on the up and the Elite League is more colourful than ever, it''s a very exciting time for the sport.''
