£1000 DONATED BY BEN
08 November 2006 - BEN Motor & Alied Trades Benevolent Fund
The discovery of a rare picture of Florence Nightingale has thrilled the Florence Nightingale Museum, in London, which has been given the sepia-toned picture by the family of William Slater Senior, the photographer.
As a gesture of thanks the Museum has agreed to donate £1000 to the charity BEN Lynwood.on the request of Evelyn Barker, a relative of the Slater family and retired Chief Welfare Officer at BEN. Evelyn was the cousin of Bill Slater, grandson of William Slater senior. Her cousin Bill spent several months being lovingly cared for in the Claude Wallis Wing at Lynwood in Ascot after he was viciously assaulted and robbed in his home. William Slater Senior was a pharmacist in Romsey and it is recorded that he provided Florence Nightingale with medical supplies for the Crimean War. They are reported to have been close friends. Indeed, a photograph taken by William Slater in the mid 19th Century of Miss Nightingale carrying the inscription F N at Embley, together with a collection of pictures of her sister and other dignitaries including Queen Victoria, were uncovered last year on the death of Evelyn’s cousin, Bill. This newly discovered photograph was found in a long forgotten album has revealed a more carefree and romantic side to the Lady with the Lamp. The heroine of the Crimean War and nursing reform was a recluse for much of her life and hated the camera. As a result there are few available pictures available. The photograph is now on public display at the Museum, 2 Lambeth Palace Road, London SE1 7EW. www.florence-nightingale.co.uk Mr Attwell, Director from the Florence Nightingale Museum Trust, will make the cheque presentation on Wednesday 22nd November at 2pm. This generous donation of £1000 will be used to equip three rooms at Lynwood within both the nursing and residential wings. One room will be named “The Florence Nightingale Room” the second “The Bill Slater Room” and the third room has yet to be named.
