AWARDS PRESENTED AT NEC
03 November 2006 - International Motorcycle and Scooter Show

The official Bennetts British Superbike Awards took place today in the Arai Race Paddock on the Blackhorse Stage at the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show.

Visitors to the NEC Show in Birmingham were able watch the live ceremony in which BSB heroes such as 2006 Champion, Ryuichi Kiyonari and runners-up Leon Haslam and Gregorio Lavilla take to the stage and received their trophies. Hosted by Bennetts BSB event commentators, Fred Clarke and Larry Carter and in its second year at the NEC Show, the ceremony marked the end of the 2006 Championship and included awards for the BSB Champion, BSB winning manufacturer, Supersport Champion, 125 Champion and many more.

Filled with BSB fans of all ages, the atmosphere in the Arai Race Paddock was electric as an impressive line-up of top riders collected their awards and stuck around afterwards to speak to fans and sign autographs. The ceremony kicked off with a review of the year consisting of a video montage of 2006 BSB highlights followed by the first award of the ceremony, the 2006 National Superstock Championship received by Brendon Roberts. The Blackhorse Stage was then inundated with stars including James Whitham who sang the praises of the British crowds who he hailed as the “best in the world”.

Star of the show and winner of the 2006 British Superbike Championship, Ryuichi Kiyonari was delighted to receive his award and commented “I felt Honda were the strongest team and I am happy to race with them. I am looking forward to racing with again them next year”. Leon Haslam who came second in the Championship and won the 2006 Riders Rider of the Year award commented, “Its been a fantastic year with tremendous support from the British public. I hope to carry it all into next year and do one better”. At the end of the show Kiyonari presented an award on behalf of MCN and the Internatisnal Motorcycle and Scooter Show to Chris Reed of the Essex Advanced Motorcyclist Group, who was crowned the inaugural winner of the MCN’s Pride of Biking, voted for by readers of MCN.

Chris Martin – Bennetts British Superbike Cup
Dan Cooper – British 125GP Championship
Brendan Roberts – National Superstock Championship
Tom Grant – Virgin Mobile Cup
Bob Collins – National Superstock Cup
Anthony Rogers – British 125 Championship
Pete Spalding – British Supersport Cup

In addition to today’s Award ceremony, the Super-Moto feature and the host of well-know riders in attendance, sports fans planning to visit the Show will be spoilt for choice when it comes to the Sports Bikes on display. Amongst the speed machines on show are the impressive Suzuki GSX-R1000, Yamaha’s YZF-R1 Honda’s CBR 600RR, Kawasaki’s Ninja ZX6R and Triumph’s Daytona 675 all brand new for 2007.

Finlay McAllan, Managing Director of the NEC Bike Show organisers, MCI Exhibitions commented “The atmosphere this year was really fantastic with fans from all over the UK turning up to watch the event. Award ceremonies are usually reserved for the VIPs and industry types so It is really great for fans who have followed the racing all year, to be able to witness the awards live.”

Tickets are still available to purchase at the Show. Standard ticket prices are £15 for adults, £13 for students, £5 for senior citizens and children between eleven and sixteen, and £35 for a family ticket. Children under the age of eleven are admitted for free.
