TROPHY HOPES DASHED
27 October 2006 - Wolverhampton Speedway
Coventry 45 Wolverhampton 45 (Coventry win 90-88 on aggregate) WOLVERHAMPTON''S hopes of lifting the Midland Trophy were a dashed on the very last bend of the second leg at Brandon as the Bees grabbed a huge slice of fortune. Coventry needed a 4-2 from the last race to draw the tie, but it was Wolves who held the 4-2 until the riders went into the final turn and Scott Nicholls moved around Freddie Lindgren, who spun and fell as he tried to resist. That also affected the run of the following Peter Karlsson, and Rory Schlein shot through to give the Bees the 5-1 they needed to draw the match on the night and take the Trophy by two points. Wolves had led by six on aggregate with three heats to go, thanks largely to two race wins apiece from Magnus Karlsson and Christian Hefenbrock, and a pair of 5-1s in Heats 7 and 8. Nicholls and Schlein kept the home side in the hunt by taking a 5-1 in Heat 13, and Chris Harris overtook both Lingdren and Magnus Karlsson in Heat 14 to set up the last-heat decider which finished in cruel fashion for Wolves. COVENTRY: Scott Nicholls 14+1, Rory Schlein 11+1, Olly Allen 7+1, Billy Janniro 6+2, Chris Harris 6+1, Ben Barker 1, Christian Henry 0. WOLVES: Magnus Karlsson 10+1, Peter Karlsson 9, Fredrik Lindgren 7+2, Christian Hefenbrock 7, Billy Hamill 7, Ronnie Correy 3+1, William Lawson 2+1.
