Charpentier wins World Supersport title with Toseland second in Superbikes

Winston Ten Kate Honda using WP Suspension secured second place in the World Superbike Championship helped by a James Toseland race win at the final round in Magny Cours while Sebastian Charpentier took the World Supersport title with team mate Kenan Sofuoglu third in the series.

Toseland World Superbike Championship runner-up and race winner

James Toseland scored his third race win of the 2006 season in the first outing at Magny-Cours on his Winston Ten Kate Honda in what was a thrilling four way battle involving plenty of ‘paint swapping’ after the race was initially delayed by an oil spill shortly after the start.

Toseland followed this up with a third place in race two where he led for most of the race in another great tussle with the Australian pair of Troy Bayliss and Troy Corser. He was eventually forced to ease of the pace or risk a crash settling for third which confirmed his second place in the overall championship rankings on 336 points.

Meanwhile his Superbike team mate Karl Muggeridge equaled his season best result of sixth in race two, despite a fall and DNF in race one as he finished the 2006 season 12th overall on 123 points.

The Winston Ten Kate Honda team has confirmed that Toseland will be riding for them again in 2007 with the second rider currently undecided.

Charpentier takes Supersport title with Sofuoglu third

Sebastien Charpentier won both the Magny Cours race and the 2006 World Supersport Championship in dramatic fashion in front of his home crowd in France on the weekend. Due to the late finish of the first Superbike race the Supersport final was also delayed. Once underway Charpentier and team mate Kenan Sofuoglu quickly muscled into the lead pack when the championship leader Kevin Curtain fell shortly after on the eighth lap.

Curtain needed to finish only eighth in the race to win the series but his fall left Charpentier clear to win both the race and title with Sofuoglu coming home second and Broc Parkes third. History was also made at Magny Cours by Charpentier becoming the first rider to take back-to-back World Supersport titles.

Charpentier finished the season on 194 points with Curtain second following his last race incident on 187 and Sofuoglu was third on 157. In what has been another stunning season for the Winston Ten Kate Honda team in Supersport their riders scored eight poles and eight wins with Charpentier topping it off by picking up the fifth straight Riders'' Championship on behalf of Honda and his team.
