OXFORD SPEEDWAY
09 October 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

OXFORD Silver Machine Academy youngster Sam Martin suffered a broken femur in an horrific crash at Cowley on Friday night.

The 15-year-old Australian sustained the injury in Heat 2 of the Academy''s clash with Armadale, and promoter Nigel Wagstaff was full of praise for the safety standards in place at the stadium which he felt prevented even more serious injuries. Wagstaff said: ''Sam is going to have his thigh pinned on Saturday lunchtime, and it obviously means he is set for an extended stay in this country. ''Fortunately we have the Airtek Air Barrier at Oxford which is used for Conference League matches as well as the Elite League, and without that I don''t know what we would be reporting on. ''I would also like to pay tribute to our medical crew, led by Jude Lamotte, who were exceptionally good. Sam''s thigh was at right-angles to how it should be when they reached him, and they managed to straighten it out. When you see a 15-year-old lying there on the track it really brings it home to you. ''We also have an excellent relationship with the ambulance service and the John Radcliffe Hospital and thank them for their help.'' Oxford will hold a collection for Martin at their next Conference fixture, which is a League and Knockout Cup double-header against title-winners Mildenhall on Wednesday.
