Best of British gather to decide the Champion of Brands - BMCRC bike championship finals
After the thrills and spills of last weekend’s BSB championship finale, the bikes are back at Brands this weekend (7/8 October) for one of the most prestigious motorcycle racing events of the year – the BMCRC Champion Of Brands. Steeped in history, previous winners of the Champion of Brands race include such legends as Mike Hailwood, John Surtess, Derek Minter, Barry Sheene and Damon Hill – all of whom have lifted the coveted AMC-Matchless Cup trophy. With such a prize at stake, Brands will be thronging with the UK’s best teams and riders which includes a strong local contingent. Maidstone’s Steve Mercer, who has notched up 49 wins and two championships this year, is likely to be a contender as is Erith’s Rob Elsmere although there are a number of premier riders capable of taking the title. Local hopes will also be on Gray’s Lee Cross, Sidcup’s Lee Allen, Beckenham’s Chris Cormier, and Purfleet’s Pat Sheridan in the big capacity class, while riders from the Supersport division will include Londoners Oli Henderson and Oliver Dupuy, Wickford’s Phil Edwards, Steve Walker from Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells racer Jack Sim. The famous Champion of Brands event will form the focal point of this weekend’s BMCRC-MRO Championship meeting. Riders from Powerbike, Stocksport, Forza Xtreme, Supersport 600 and GP 250 will qualify for a crack at one of the most famous titles in motorcycle racing. While the bigger bikes are sure to have a performance advantage in the dry, the rain is always a great leveller. Even a GP 250 mounted rider could be successful in certain conditions, such as that of Sittingbourne racer Chris Bishop, who was a CoB winner in 1999 riding a 250 RS Honda. With such a big prize at stake, plus a packed supporting programme, Brands Hatch is the place to be for motorcycle racing this weekend. Tickets for this weekend’s BMCRC Championship Finals, featuring the Champion of Brands race at Brands Hatch, are available on the gate priced at £12. Admission free for children aged 12 and under.
