WOLVERHAMPTON SPEEDWAY
20 September 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

WOLVES will face Ipswich in the semi-finals of the Elite League play-offs after a convincing 61-33 win over a weakened Oxford at Monmore.

The visitors were hardly helped by the absence of inspirational skipper Greg Hancock who withdrew on the morning of the meeting with sickness. That left Oxford boss Nigel Wagstaff with no time to find a suitable guest and his eventual replacement, fellow Californian Josh Larsen, was simply not up to the task. But this should take little or nothing away from Wolverhampton''s efforts as they took full advantage of the fact that they were at home - and it should also be remembered that they were without both first choice riders Daniel Nermark and Simon Stead. Mikael Max led from the front with a faultless 15-point maximum despite only just arriving at the meeting in time due to flight problems, and veteran Sam Ermolenko put up another vintage showing, dropping just one point. Wolves hit Oxford hard and early, and the Silver Machine''s night was summed up by the incidents of Heat 7 when both Rafal Dobrucki and Ryan Fisher fell leaving Wolves to be awarded a 5-0. Despite mechanical problems costing both Chris Neath and Fredrik Lindgren points in their last rides, Wolves still broke the 60-point barrier thanks to a last-heat 5-1 from Max and Ermolenko - and they appear to be in prime form for Ipswich''s visit next week. Boss Peter Adams said: ''Hopefully this will underline how powerful we can be and it serves a reminder to Ipswich about what we are capable of, but it will be tough next week without doubt.''
WOLVERHAMPTON: Sam Ermolenko 15+2, Mikael Max 15, Adam Skornicki 9+1, David Howe 9, Chris Neath 8+3, Fredrik Lindgren 5+3, rider replacement for Daniel Nermark.
OXFORD: Niels-Kristian Iversen 13+1, Rafal Dobrucki 8, Ryan Fisher 5+2, Josh Larsen 4, Travis McGowan 2+1, Jonas Davidsson 1.
