TRIUMPH TRIBUTE
24 September 2004 - Triumph ValMoto
A triumphant ValMoto team is intent on claiming its second victory in two weeks this weekend.
Fresh from its maiden British Supersport victory at Donington Park last weekend, the team is heading to Scarborough for the David Jefferies Memorial Race. John McGuinness is riding the Triumph ValMoto Daytona 600 at the seaside town as a tribute to his friend David Jefferies. Successful road racer McGuinness was part of the Triumph ValMoto team that won the Isle of Man TT last year with Bruce Anstey and Jim Moodie. He was also a good friend of road racer David Jefferies, who held the outright lap record for the TT before McGuinness seized it this year. Jefferies was killed in a crash on the TT circuit last May and since then his family and the motorcycling community have fought to keep his memory alive. On the 29th May this year – the anniversary of his death – a memorial fund was launched to regularly provide income to other charities connected to motorcycle sport and to children. DJ had countless wins in Scarborough throughout his racing career. McGuinness is determined to score a double race win in this weekend’s two-leg event to at Oliver’s Mount International Gold Cup Races to further honour his friend’s memory. ValMoto team manager Jack Valentine said: “John was a very good friend of David Jefferies and he was part of the winning Triumph Valmoto team at the Isle of Man TT, so when he asked if he could race for us at this event, we had no option but to say yes. David Jefferies is well remembered and his family is well thought of. While it would be great for John to win this trophy, the most important thing is participating in the race.” A “big ride-in” is taking place on Sunday morning in memory of David Jefferies. All riders should meet at the Morrisons roundabout on the A64 in Scarborough.
