SPEEDWAY: NEWS AND FIXTURES 20.9.04
20 September 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

SHEFFIELD skipper Andre Compton won a controversial Premier League Riders'' Championship on his own Owlerton track. Compton was awarded the win after he crashed alongside Workington''s Simon Stead in the final and referee Will Hunter excluded Stead.

Stead had qualified for the final with a 15-point maximum but only finished third overall with Exeter''s Mark Lemon runner-up behind Compton. Isle of Wight star Craig Boyce was fourth.

ANDRE Compton was battered and bruised as he celebrated his first ever Premier League Riders'' Championship glory. He said: ''I don''t really know where I am at the moment, I feel all knocked about and it will take a bit of time to sink in that I have won it. ''All I kept getting told in the build-up to the meeting was that Simon Stead was unbeatable around Sheffield and I''ve done it.''

HEARTBROKEN Simon Stead has refused to get involved in a war of words over his controversial exclusion in the Premier League Riders'' Championship. The Workington man said: ''There is no point in getting involved in anything like that, I''m just hurting all over and I think people could see who was the best rider on the night. ''I dislocated my shoulder and I put it back in myself.''
