SILVERSTONE MASTERCLASS
26 September 2006 - Aprilia
Sam Warren showed a clean pair of heels to all challengers at the inaugural MotoGB Supermoto Masters Cup held at the Silverstone circuit with pole position, a fastest lap time and two convincing race wins on the weekend.
It was the first time Supermoto had ever been to the Northamptonshire circuit with the all-tarmac infield track an interesting mixture of tight sections and wide open, fast corners. The event was billed as an inter-club meet held along similar lines to the Supermoto Des Nations with SR Off-Road Aprilia rider Warren lining up with the NORA ‘team’ against the Southern Supermoto side that featured approximately 50 riders apiece. With a wet practice, conditions were starting to dry for qualifying and Warren was able to set a pole position time nearly a second quicker than any other rider. In the first race Warren immediately made a break on the chasing pack and main rival Andy Mitchell eventually running out a comfortable winner by more than 10 seconds. Race two saw more of the same after an early red-flag due to an incident led to a re-start. Once again the young Derbyshire rider created a significant buffer for himself and then set about controlling the race pace through to the finish. SR Off-Road Aprilia boss Mick Spencer said it was a good day at the office. “The organisers have done a good job with the new Silverstone track and the format was a little different which made things interesting. For us it was just another day at the office and the ideal build-up to the Des Nations for Sam. It all ran like clockwork really without any incidents or dramas.” The Masters Cup event slotted in just a week before the Supermoto Des Nations to be held at Bishopscourt in Northern Ireland on the Ist October. Warren and the SR Off-Road Aprilia team will be representing British hopes along with Matt Winstanley and Christian Iddon. Warren is confident of a strong performance at the Des Nations rating the Belgians, Italians, French and Germans as the main rivals. Another challenge is the switch to the smaller 450cc Aprilia for the SM2 class which the team has hastily prepared. “The Des Nations is going to be a who’s who of the best riders in the world. We would rate the Belgians, Italians, French and Germans as our main rivals with the target being a podium finish. The other challenge is going to be getting on the smaller SM2 bike for the first time this year. Both the team and I are really looking forward to it.”
