SPEEDWAY NEWS AND FIXTURES - 25TH SEPTEMBER
25 September 2006 - British Speedway Promoters Association

SPEEDWAY 1

SOMERSET skipper Magnus Zetterstrom is the new Premier League Riders'' Champion after a stunning performance at Sheffield.

Zetterstrom was top qualifier for the grand final after dropping one-point and he made no mistake by beating Mildenhall''s Jason Lyons (13), Gary Havelock of Redcar (12) and King''s Lynn ace Tomas Topinka (11).

Home hopes were dashed when Sheffield skipper Andre Compton crashed out of heat 13 and was in agony with shoulder injuries after winning two of his three rides.

SPEEDWAY 2

SWINDON''S Renat Gafurov will miss the rest of the season after receiving a 28-day ban for withholding his services.

Gafurov has been called up to race in the Russian League this week, ruling him out of the Robins'' crucial Elite League play-off at Reading.

Club owner Terry Russell said: ''The timing couldn''t be worse. Having been informed at such short notice I have no option but to make a stand.''

SPEEDWAY 3

PETERBOROUGH and Coventry go into play-off semi-final action on Monday in a repeat of the meeting between the clubs at the same stage in 2005.

Coventry won 55-41 last season, but having finished top of the Elite League table it is the Panthers who have the benefit of home advantage this time.

Owner Colin Horton has promised a spectacular Showground night, including big-screen coverage of the other semi-final at Reading.
