Elite League: COVENTRY 51 WOLVES 42

WOLVERHAMPTON''S brave play-off qualification bid came to an end with defeat at Brandon in their penultimate Elite League fixture.

The Parrys International Wolves gave it their all against Coventry, but after a nine-point victory it is the Bees who have claimed the fourth and final play-off spot.
Coventry took the lead with a 5-1 from their reserves in Heat 2, but early wins for Peter Karlsson and Billy Hamill kept Wolves in contention until the American came home third in Heat 7.

That saw Coventry open up an eight point lead, which they still held after Heat 10 - by which time the first tactical ride had been used, Fredrik Lindgren finishing second for four points in Heat 9.

Billy Hamill came into Heat 12 from a 15-metre handicap as a tactical subsitute but could not find a way past Olly Allen for second place - however, a 4-2 from Karlsson and Lindgren in Heat 13 narrowed the gap to just three points.

But the Bees took the advantage they required from Heat 14 when Martin Smolinski, who was undoubtedly their key man at reserve, beat Hamill and Chris Harris overhauled Magnus Karlsson for third place.

It left Wolves needing a highly unlikely 5-0 in the last race for a draw, but in fact the Bees took a 5-1 and for the Monmore men, the aggregate bonus point was not enough to extend their interest in the play-offs.

COVENTRY: Martin Smolinski 12, Scott Nicholls 11+1, Chris Harris 10+1, Billy Janniro 6+2, Rory Schlein 5+1, Olly Allen 4, Troy Batchelor 3+1.

WOLVES: Billy Hamill 11, Peter Karlsson 10+1, Fredrik Lindgren 10, Ronnie Correy 4, Christian Hefenbrock 4, William Lawson 2+1, Magnus Karlsson 1+1.
