A BAD DAY AT SILVERSTONE FOR JON
19 September 2006 - Jon Kirkham

Torrid time for Kirkham

After a solid performance the previous round at Cadwell Park which saw Scuderia Stellare’s Jon Kirkham pick up a top ten finish there was a dramatic reversal of fortunes at Silverstone where nothing went right for the young Derbyshire rider.

Kirkham’s torrid weekend at the Northamptonshire circuit started in qualifying where a freak exhaust failure left him struggling just outside the top twenty on the timesheets.

Team spokesperson Chris Johnson explained.

“We’ve never seen anything like this before. One of the welds on the exhaust failed which was bad enough but the heat from the exhaust then played havoc with the bikes electrics. The upshot is that Jon’s qualifying was compromised as a result.”

On the back foot, Kirkham made a good start in race one before succumbing to a technical failure after only five laps which forced him to coast into the pits. Speaking after the race Kirkham said he was trying to remain positive.

“This season has been really tough. We’ve had so many ups and downs and don’t seem to be able to consistently build on any good results that we do have. A big part of the problem is that the team’s budget has been stretched to the limit.

At the end of the day I just want to ride a bike and I all I can do is give a 110% on the kit that I’m given. Everyone is doing their best and I’ve just got to do the same.”

In race two and with the mechanical gremlins solved Kirkham got his head down and battled his way to sixteenth, just outside the points.

Speaking at the end of the day spokesperson Johnson said it was yet another gritty performance from his young charge.

“It’s been a really tough weekend for all concerned. Jon though has kept his head despite the difficulties and got on with the job which is a real credit to him. We’ve got one last chance at Brands in a few weeks to shine and we’ll be doing everything we can to make sure we got out on a high.”

The final round of the 2006 British Superbike Championship will be at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent on the 1st of October.
