A WEEKEND OF RACING
20 September 2006 - AMA Pro Racing
ROAD AMERICA HOSTS COMBINED AMA SUPERMOTO/CHAMP CAR WEEKEND
Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wis., is set to host a weekend of racing that is sure to satisfy a wide variety of motorsports fans. In a first, the AMA Supermoto Championship presented by Parts Unlimited will run in conjunction with the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford on Sept. 22-24. The Aprilia Supermoto Shootout will run under the lights on Saturday night at Road America’s Briggs & Stratton Motorplex. “We’re excited about featuring an AMA Supermoto Championship round to fans of Champ Car,” said Joel Grover, AMA Supermoto Director. “Exposing AMA Supermoto to this group of motorsports enthusiasts will help raise the awareness of our championship.”
Ironically, Jeff Ward, leader of the AMA Supermoto Championship, has roots in both worlds. Ward is not only a legend in motorcycle racing he also raced Indy Cars and was Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year in 1997.
“I think it’s great that we’re bringing these two worlds of racing together,” said Ward, who leads rival Doug Henry by 22 points coming into Saturday’s race. “Even though we’ve raced at Road America before, it’s going to be a new challenge racing under the lights.”
This marks the second round of the AMA Supermoto Championship held at Road America’s Briggs & Stratton Motorplex this year. In June Ward swept both championship rounds on the circuit on his Troy Lee Designs Honda. Henry, who rides for Graves Motorsports Yamaha, also won at Road America in 2005, so this round promises to be a great contest between the leading championship contenders.
Other riders to watch at Road America include Ward’s Honda teammate Chris Fillmore. Fillmore, of Oxford, Mich., loves the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex and has been knocking on the door of winning his first AMA Supermoto race all season. Fillmore is third in the standings. Mark Burkhart, of Pickerington, Ohio, is Doug Henry’s teammate with Yamaha and he has proven to be a potential winner at every round. Burkhart, the 2005 AMA Supermoto Lites Champion, will be looking to make a late-season charge.
Two-time South African Supermoto Champion Brian Capper will make the trip to the U.S. to race at Road America with the Red Bull KTM HMC squad as will Frenchman Adrien Chareyre, a world championship contender. Chareyre will ride with GP Husqvarna.
Cassidy Anderson leads the AMA Supermoto Lites Championship coming into this weekend’s race. Anderson, of Provo, Utah, has won six of the seven rounds so far this year on his Troy Lee Designs Honda. Anderson is trying to hold off rival Brandon Currie, who took his first win of the season in the last event in Denver, Colo.
The AMA Supermoto Unlimited class has become a three-rider battle between David Baffeleuf, Wisconsin’s own Ben Carlson, of West Bend, and defending class champ Micky Dymond. The trio of riders is separated by just 10 points. Carlson is hoping the home track advantage will help him close in on Baffeleuf.
Tickets available for purchase online or by phone at 1-800-365-7223. Fri. $25; Sat. $40; Sun. $60. Both tent and RV campsites are available for the weekend.
