3RD PLACE FOR PHILIPPAERTS IN CHAMPIONSHIP
17 September 2006 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
Red Bull KTM’s David Philippaerts scored second position overall at the curtain-closing event in the 2006 FIM Motocross World Championships at Ernee for the Grand Prix of France.
The Italian overtook team-mate Tyla Rattray to earn third place in the final series standings. The French circuit was busy with 16, 537 spectators crowding the bank opposite a rutted and rough track that was slippery with a hard surface underneath the dark and thin mud. Bright but cloudy conditions graced the racing after a wet start to the weekend. Philippaerts rode well for two third positions to crush a six point deficit to Rattray. The South African endured two bad starts and could only finish 6th overall with 7th and 6th. Behind the Italian Marc de Reuver’s runner-up placing in the wheel-tracks of double victor Antonio Cairoli helped towards a standing of fourth overall and new British Champion Carl Nunn was very consistent with a 4th and a 5th for 5th at the end of the afternoon. All four MX2 riders placed in the top six and also scored 3rd to 6th in the World Championship classification. Rattray slipped to five points behind Philippaerts with De Reuver fifth and Nunn sixth. Jonathan Barragan had another strong Grand Prix only two weeks after a mature and consistent performance in the sand of Lierop. The Spaniard finished second to Stefan Everts in the first moto for his 8th top three result from 30 races this year. A mistake stalling the bike in the second outing dropped him out of 3rd position but he rallied well to take 5th. Mickael Pichon was the victim of a spectacular crash on the second corner and his Grand Prix farewell lasted less than ten seconds after the Frenchman needed to be taken away by stretcher with concussion, a broken nose and back pain. Yves Demaria was holding third in the first moto but his lap-times soon tailed off and the MX3 World Champion retired unhappy with his bike set-up. A similar story occurred in the second sprint. David Philippaerts has finished as KTM’s top representative from both classes in 2006. The 250 SX-F has owned 9 Grand Prix from 15, and 12 motos from 30 (Rattray with 4 wins and 5 motos, Philippaerts 4 and 6, Marc de Reuver won a race and the overall at the Bulgaria Grand Prix). Carl Nunn chipped in with 2 podiums for a total of 20 in MX2. KTM celebrated success again by taking the manufacturer’s title in MX2. Barragan has taken a career-best with 6th in the MX1 ranking. Sebastien Tortelli was 21st despite missing 12 rounds through injury. All members of the 2006 KTM works Motocross team competing at Ernee will be taking part in the 60th Motocross of Nations next week at Matterley Basin in England for their respective countries. Tyla Rattray: “Coming here I was lying in third position and six points from David and I basically gave the races away on the start today. There were terrible and I definitely need to work on those. I will be doing as many as it takes through the winter to get this area of my riding a lot better than it currently is. The season is over now and there is not much I can do about it. I am looking forward now to have another crack at the Championship next year. If I can stay free of these little injuries I know I can be on top.” David Philippaerts: “It was a good day but very difficult. There was some pressure to get that third position in the championship and I knew it would be close between Tyla and I. In the first heat I had a very good start and some decent lines but then I had a small crash and Pourcel passed me. I took third and had some points over Tyla. In the second race I was only watching for his position. To finish third is good for KTM and also me because MX2 has been very tough this year.” Marc de Reuver: “The start in the first heat was not so good. I managed to come back to eighth and after twenty minutes I could really push and had a good speed. I was too cautious in the first part of the race. In the second moto I saw Pourcel coming and I let him by because I did not want to get mixed up in that Championship fight. I saw him fighting with Cairoli and I was just following when Pourcel crashed and I could take second. I was fast for some laps but then made some mistakes on others, however overall I am happy. The season was disappointing for a spell after the Bulgarian race; what more can I say? Fifth is still my best Championship finish. I have always been very happy with KTM but my injuries played a large part in my results and I could not always give them the trophies that I was capable of. I rode for a Dutch team and there was a close bond there. I have been very happy in my years here and I have a big challenge now for 2007.” Jonathan Barragan: “This was the best race of the year for me. I felt good on the bike and the track, and was strong in both motos. I knew the podium was within reach and it was a shame that I stalled the bike. It took a bit of time to get it started but I could pass many riders and overtake Ramon and De Dycker. It has been a good season. There have been a few low moments but I think I have proved myself, learned a lot and want to get better next year.” Yves Demaria: “I did not receive the bike until quite late this week and I could not set it up how I wanted. I had a good start and was keen to contest this Grand Prix but it was not possible to make decent results.” Georges Jobe, MX1 Team Manager: “Mickael broke his nose and he may have some concussion but he is still at the hospital. I saw the crash and it was really bad. He jumped off the bike and landed face-first on the ground. The helmet pushed up and broke his nose it seemed. It has been a hard year for the team but the positive things for me have been the fact that there has not been one DNF through mechanical problems so the mechanics and team have done a great job and that is also good for KTM. If we could have started with David earlier maybe he could have been higher in the Championship but third is very good anyway. Jonathan’s progression has been very good and I think we all have to be satisfied with sixth overall.” MX1 Moto1 1. EVERTS Stefan BEL YAMAHA 39:47.108 2. BARRAGAN Jonathan SPA KTM 39:51.102 3.
