URBAN WARRIOR: BUELL UNLEASHES LIGHTNING CITYX XB9SX
15 September 2004 - Harley-Davidson UK

The Buell Lightning CityX XB9SX is bred to rule the streets.

The new Buell gives the innovative Lightning platform a tough new profile and offers performance that’s especially suited to urban riding – a combination of agile handling and muscular mid-range power.

“The Lightning CityX XB9SX is our new urban streetfighter, styled and engineered for rapid city riding,” said Patrice Morin, Buell UK’s marketing manager. “This is a bike for the rider who needs to dodge taxis, slip past traffic queues with ease and grab their favourite shortcut.”

The first ever use of ‘see through’ styling on a Buell motorcycle makes the CityX the ultimate naked bike. The Hero Blue airbox cover and flyscreen are made of a new translucent plastic that gives the motorcycle colour but also allows mechanical elements to be visible through the material.

The exclusive black-and-blue styling of the CityX establishes an attitude for both motorcycle and rider; rugged and ready for each and every street corner. The instruments and perforated tail insert are also blue – at night these instruments come to life with a subtle blue glow.

To camouflage urban grime, the Lightning XB9SX features Villain Black cast aluminium wheels and Midnight Black lower body panels. Pirelli Scorpion Sync tyres have an aggressive tread pattern and offer exceptional grip across the ever-changing street-scape.

With its handlebar deflectors and distinctive headlight grille the Lightning CityX XB9SX tackles whatever the street throws at it. The soft rubber Buell X Guard shields the airbox from tankbag scuffing. A new Skyline seat and a wide Villain Black handlebar with a Super Motard-inspired crossbar, promotes a comfortable, upright riding style perfect for viewing the traffic ahead.

The heart of the CityX is the Buell Thunderstorm 984cc fuel-injected V-twin engine. It is tuned to deliver the kind of mid-range power urban riders can use to slice through rush hour traffic, merge with authority and out-muscle the masses from traffic light to traffic light. Peak output is 83hp and a thumping 63.14lb ft of torque, delivered through a smooth, durable drivebelt.

The engine is mounted in a Buell Lightning chassis that’s ideal for the cut-and-thrust business of city biking. An ultra-short 1320mm wheelbase, 21-degree fork angle and 85mm of trail gives the Lighting XB9SX razor-sharp reflexes.

Erik Buell’s ‘design trilogy’ of frame rigidity, mass centralisation and low un-sprung weight enhances the motorcycle’s response to rider input. The swingarm doubles as the engine oil reservoir, the fuel is stored in the aluminium frame and the muffler is located below the engine.

The front wheel features the powerful Buell Zero Torsional Load brake system, with a 375mm inside-out disc and a six-piston caliper, suspended by a 43mm, fully adjustable Showa inverted fork.

The new Lightning CityX XB9SX will start carving through the UK’s city streets this September; get ready to start loving every second of your commute into work.
